5 Hair Care Ingredients That May Be Causing Itchy Scalp

If you're experiencing an itchy scalp, it could be due to a number of factors. One possible culprit could be the ingredients in your hair care products. Certain hair care ingredients can be allergens or cause irritation for some people, especially those with skin sensitivities. Here are five hair care ingredients that may be causing your itchy scalp:

1. Fragrance and masking fragrance

Fragrances are often added to hair care products to give them a pleasant scent. Masking fragrances are designed to mask a bad smell and create a neutral smell. Because the ingredient names associated with fragrances may be difficult to identify, we have compiled a list of fragrances to help sensitive consumers avoid these problematic ingredients.

2. Botanicals

Botanicals can be a hidden source of fragrance ingredients. Some examples of botanicals used in hair care products include chamomile, lavender, and hibiscus.

3. Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI)

Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) are common preservative systems used in liquid personal care products like shampoos.

4. Formaldehyde Releasers

Many hair products utilize formaldehyde releasers as a preservative. Some examples of formaldehyde releasers include Bronopol, Diazolidinyl Urea, and DMDM Hydantoin.

5. Dyes

Dyes are used in some hair products to make the product a certain color. Some examples of potentially irritating dyes include D&C Yellow #11, FD&C Blue #1, and FD&C Yellow #5 (also known as tartrazine).

If you're experiencing an itchy scalp, it's important to closely examine the ingredients in your hair care products, as you may be experiencing an allergy. If you are struggling with an itchy or irritated scalp, it is a good idea to see your dermatologist in order to find the cause. It may be beneficial to switch to products that are free from these five ingredients, like Vanicream™ Hair Care products, and see if your symptoms improve. Be sure to always patch-test a new product before use. With some care and attention, you can help soothe your itchy scalp and enjoy healthy, happy hair.
