ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Support and manage the packaging development process, including coordination with internal teams and external vendors from concept through commercialization
- Develop, manage, and maintain packaging component specifications and technical packaging requirements, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with quality, regulatory and sustainability standards
- Partner with Supply Chain and external vendors to obtain technical documentation and manage packaging qualification activities
- Formalize and expand the company's early-stage EPR compliance program, maturing systems, processes, governance, and documentation infrastructure
- Monitor, interpret, and translate state EPR regulations and packaging source reduction requirements into actionable compliance plans, including but not limited to California (SB 54), Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Maryland, Minnesota, and Maine
- Mature and maintain robust systems for collecting, tracking, auditing, and reporting packaging data required under EPR schemes, including accurate calculation of packaging material volumes, recyclability, and fee obligations
- Project manage cross-functional EPR and sustainability initiatives, ensuring timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder responsibilities are clearly defined and met
- Prepare and submit required regulatory filings, reports, and fee payments to applicable agencies and Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) accurately and on time
- Serve as the primary internal subject matter expert and external liaison with PROs, regulatory bodies, and compliance consultants
- Collaborate with Packaging, Procurement, and R&D teams to identify opportunities for packaging redesign, material reduction, increased recyclability, and waste minimization in support of source reduction mandates
- Develop and deliver training and guidance to internal teams on EPR obligations, sustainable packaging requirements, and source reduction strategies
- Lead the company's broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting and sustainability initiatives as the program matures
- Review environmental claims for products, website, retailers, and marketing in accordance with FTC Guidelines, CA SB343, and other applicable regulations
- Support internal audits and regulatory inspections related to EPR, packaging, and sustainability compliance
COMPETENCIES
- Self-starter with the ability to formalize and expand an early-stage program with minimal supervision
- Strong project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage competing priorities
- Solid understanding of packaging design, packaging materials, and technical packaging requirements for OTC topicals and cosmetic personal care products
- Experience managing packaging component specifications and supporting the packaging development process from concept through commercialization
- Solid understanding of EPR frameworks, packaging waste regulations, and source reduction principles, particularly California SB 54
- Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, actionable business steps
- Strong analytical skills with experience managing and reporting on complex data sets
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail in compliance reporting and specification management
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex regulatory information to diverse audiences
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; comfortable with data management tools and sustainability reporting software

- There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

USUAL WORKING HOURS
- Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This position may require occasional travel for regulatory, educational, or industry engagement purposes.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Regulatory Affairs, or a related field
- 2–4 years of experience in EPR compliance, sustainable packaging, packaging development, or a related field, preferably within the pharmaceutical, life sciences, or consumer goods industries
- Working knowledge of EPR regulations, with demonstrated familiarity with California SB 54 and other state packaging producer responsibility programs
- Experience managing packaging component specifications and technical packaging requirements through the packaging development process
- Demonstrated experience formalizing or expanding compliance programs and processes in an early-stage or evolving program environment
- Strong project management skills with experience leading cross-functional initiatives
- Experience with packaging materials, recyclability standards, and circular economy principles preferred
- Familiarity with FTC Green Guides, CA SB343, and environmental claims review a plus
- Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks and ESG data management a plus

- The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000 per year, commensurate with experience
